Frying Now: Fry High, Urgello

Urgello is surprisingly popping up with great, quaint little shops around the area that caters to students, residents and the adventurous foodies in Cebu, Fry High being one of them.

We’re always looking for new places to eat near our place (because let’s be honest, there aren’t too many of them in the South) so when I got the invitation to check out the place, I couldn’t pass it off!

To paint you a pretty picture, Fry High is located along the busy roads of J. Urgello street or along Sacred Heart Hospital. It’s a small shop at the side of the road and you have to keep an open eye out for it or you could possibly miss it. Be extra attentive because once you spot interiors that are beautifully plastered with black and white  murals, you’ve found the right place! Unfortunately, there is no parking in front of the store but you can park at a walking distance from it.

As I scanned the menu, I was delighted at how affordable each meal was. With meals ranging from P20.00- P99.00, I then asked myself if the food, at those prices, could possibly be any good. I mean, something that costs this cheap can’t be THAT good, right? Wrong, again.

I was able to gather that Fry High isn’t just an affordable place to dine after class or after a drunken night out, it’s a product of love. The owner of this establishment loves to cook and has an amazing way of putting a twist on already interesting pieces which are evident in dishes such as: maling sticks, dynamite, corndoggy, burger high, canton toppings, chicken proven, tuna high flakes, cheesedog balls and a lot more!

Paolo and I made a visit during dinner time and here are the photos:

As you already know, I cannot stand spicy food so I kept a nice distance from the dynamite and sisig but curiosity got the best of me and I tried it out anyways. I enjoyed both until the spice kicked in then, I was downing glasses of water until I couldn’t anymore. Paolo, on the other hand, went to town with them and ended up finishing my left overs.

We truly enjoyed our experience there and came home with full stomachs and hearts. My favorites were the ginabot, chicken and calamares but I can’t wait to go back and try out their corndoggy, burger high, batchoy, pancit canton toppings, proven and cheesedog balls. Now, that’s obviously a lot of food I want to try which means, I’ll have to make multiple trips which I completely do not mind. The ambiance there is super chill and they even have board games for you to enjoy while waiting or after enjoying your meal.

Get directions here

Fry High is open all day, everyday and can accommodate around 20 people. You can also hold private events there that can be coursed through their Facebook page.

Bring cash when you visit and make sure to come on an empty stomach!

Fry High my loves,

A Mashed Potato Recipe That Is Impossible To F*** Up

Before I learned how to make rice, I learned how to make mashed potatoes- the more important fact, I learned how to cook this in a rice cooker! I still prefer making this in a rice cooker to this day but you can make it in a sauce pan, as well.

Like I said, mashed potatoes is the first “dish” I learned and mastered how to make and today, I can literally make it in my sleep. For my first official recipe post, I am going to share my personal recipe with you and you’ll be disappointed because it’s hardly a recipe more than it is a bunch of ingredients bumped in a pan.

You might be asking yourself, why go through the hassle of making my own mashed potatoes when I can get them from the box? BECAUSE THE ONES IN THE BOX ABSOLUTELY SUCK. And that’s really the only bit of convincing I need to give you.

The best part apart this recipe is that is requires no measurements so you are as free to experiment with it as you want!

Easy Mashed Potato Recipe
Serves: 1-2 people
Preparation & cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:
2 large potatoes (peeled and squared)
Salt
Milk/ All Purpose cream
Italian herbs (optional)

How To Cook:
1. In a saucepan/ rice cooker, boil water. As soon as the water begins to boil, throw in your peeled and sliced potatoes and add salt (add a generous amount).
2. Leave potatoes in to soften and occasionally check on them until they’re soft.
How to tell if your potatoes are done boiling? If you can stick your fork into multiple cubes with ease, then it’s done.
3. Once your potatoes are soft, take out your saucepan/ pot and drain the water.
4. Add butter, milk/ cream (and Italian seasoning) and mix. Make sure to taste and add whichever to your preference.
5. With a food masher/ fork, mash and mix everything together until you reach the consistency you like.

Seriously, that’s it.

Am I a pro now? No? Ok.

I LEARNED TO COOK THROUGH THE INTERNET!

Spoiled and bratty. Those are the two things people who really know me will actually tell you if you asked them to describe me. Of course, those aren’t my only identifiers but considering I did not grow up with a silver spoon, it’s a pretty entitled thing to be- for anyone, actually.

Prior to moving out and living on my own, I had only occasionally cleaned at school (where I would even try escape), I had never really learned how to cook, I had never washed clothes (except for my ?) and yaya was my favorite word.

Justinne of BabeForFood tried to help me on a couple of occasions with an agreement that I would share my little knowledge of fashion if she taught me how to cook- we decided to turn it into a Youtube series which was short lived due to our busy schedules. You can watch the videos and be the judge….

The first two times I moved out, I moved to my grandparents’ house and paid rent but even then, I was never required to clean my room, cook or do my own laundry. I was out most of the time anyways so I never had to cook! On one occasion, I tried to sweep the floor at my office due to a confetti related incident and bruised my rib- sweeping in 3 inch heels probably wasn’t the best idea but hey. lol.

When I FINALLY moved out to live with my big, bad self, I eventually learned how to clean my space but I would call my yaya nonstop asking her for help with the dumbest things which she would blatantly reply to me with a, “HAAAAY, ISSA! UNSAON NALANG NIMO UG MA MINYO KA? WA JUD KAY NAHIBAWAN!” which I would reply to with a, “kuyog man ka nako forever.” It’s been about 2 years since but honestly, sometimes I still call her but this time just to say hi and that I miss her.

Yaya Chris with “other” child ? (and our other helper, Baby, who also had a baby. lol)

Earlier this year, P & I decided to get our own place which is when it dawned on me that I had to learn how cook… and fast! He has always been the chef between the two of us, having been able to take culinary classes at a local school here in Cebu, and while he was so great at cooking, little Issa was even too scared to touch raw meat. I didn’t want to learn how to cook just for P, let’s get one thing clear. But let’s be real, at 26 years old, it was about time- hell, it was overdue! We don’t live in the early 90’s anymore where help can easily be found- we can’t afford a kusinera or a helper and more than that, I also don’t feel like starving.

Coincidentally, it was also around this time that I had been invited to more and more food events and some of them would have activities where they would teach us how to make certain dishes. This sparked my interest in food and though I could only make the dishes that were taught to me, I would proudly bring these new found semi-skills home and show them off to P.

Slowly, I had developed an interest in food and in eating healthier which encouraged me even more to learn how to start cooking or “assembling” food. I would spend hours on Pinterest, as I still do, pinning recipes for inspiration. Here’s my board!

I started out with breakfast bowls because I had the intentions of eating healthier and well, for the obvious reasons that it’s freakin’ easy to make. Here are a few of my creations:

Bfast bowls turned into salads and sandwiches which is honestly the same thing except now you have to cook ham or your meat of choice:

And since I learned how to cook rice (after a couple weeks of either cooking it too dry or too wet. You literally just add water and yet I still had such a HARD TIME getting it right), I decided to make a deconstructed onigiri bowl after learning how to make an actual onigiri at a previous event:

I was getting homefood sick and I missed Pinoy dishes like humba, sayote with that brown sauce and soo much more! I decided, with the little skills that I had to just go ahead and try it out. I had to learn how to slice, defrost, steam and everything else by watching Youtube videos because that’s how ignorant I was and let me tell you, Youtube has EVERYTHING!

I also sought help from Chef Lau & Chef Jac who encouraged me to make humba and even taught me how to do it- I searched for a recipe online to guide me and here was the final result:

I also made a breakfast burrito wherein I even made the tortilla from scratch!

My biggest achievement though was learning how to make monggos because I really, REALLY love monggos. I started out with this pork belly with mong seeds dish (according to my uncle), which was really the opposite of what I wanted to achieve:

And now, I can literally make this dish with my eyes closed!

Since I’ve made an effort to learn how to cook, I’ve made a pretty good improvement and my friends, family and P can stand to eat my cooking without pretending to like it anymore! haha.

Image result for yummmm gif

I’d love to share my recipes and experience with you on this blog because if I can do it, ANYONE can do it! And hopefully, there’s a little girl out there in the big bad world, hungry to their gut, wishing they could cook reading this and is thinking, “if Issa can do it, so can I!”

Bon Appetite,
Issa P.

Radisson Blu Offers Japanese Cuisine at SushiSake

Radisson Blu has always been Cebu’s premiere spot when it comes to exceptional dining, facilities and top of the line treatment. Urban Table and Feria, which are Radisson Blu’s headlining restaurants both offer delectable international cuisine with a great view to pair.

In addition to this, Radisson Blu is raising the bar yet again by expanding their food selections through their newest restaurant, Sushi Sake which is poshly situated at the lobby-side which offers a great view of the hotel front and allows them access to their lounge area. Although it is located among open spaces, this 21 seater area offers guests an intimate environment perfect for those who enjoy having a small space of their own.

With a variety of Japanese favorites to choose from (scroll down for menu), the highlight of Sushi Sake would definitely have to be their choices of maki which were carefully curated by Sushi Sake’s head chef, Chef Jefferson “Jeff” Yalung. During my visit there, I was able to sample 6 of best offerings which were the Dynamite Sushi Roll, the Surf & Turf Roll, the Dragon Roll, the Spicy Salmon Roll, The Spicy Crab Roll and the Special California Roll.

Each handmade roll was a burst of individual and distinct flavors making each and every pop an experience of its own. You could tell just by the looks of it that each ingredient used was of top quality and preparation which can always be expected from Radisson Blu hotels.

What You Need To Know About Matcha ft. Matcha Garden, Cebu

For anyone who wanted to know,  Matcha is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea. It’s popular in China and Japan and over the course of time, has been slowly been making it’s way into mainstream products such as matcha KitKats, Oreos, Pocky, ice cream, drinks and what ever else you can think of!

Interesting looks and flavors aside, Matcha is supposedly very beneficial to ones health and is an even more potent source of nutrients as compared to steeped green tea. It is also said that matcha is rich in antioxidants that have been tied to the protection of heart disease, cancer, regulation of blood sugar and anti- aging. There’s also caffeine in it so you could say that it could be a better alternative to coffee.

With all its health benefits, it’s no surprise that people have been getting into the matcha craze only problem is, it’s not as easy to get your hands on as one would think.

Enter, Matcha Garden.

Matcha Garden is an online shop that frequents Japanese themed and Cosplay pop up events over the metro. They offer interesting snacks and drinks that are all incorporated with Matcha such as cookies, bites, churros, teas, lattes and more!

RED LIZARD, CEBU

My earliest memories of food involve Mexican cuisine which is why I have a certain fondness towards it. A little known fact, I lived in Burbank, California throughout kindergarten and some parts of first grade. We lived in what I fondly remember as the downtown/ slummy area of Burbank which was a multi-cultural community mostly consisting of Mexican/ Latinos, Asians and a few Americans. It was such a great time of my life and my best friend was Mexican, my nanny was Mexican, I could speak Mexican/ Spanish and I was even almost adopted by a Mexican. So I guess you can sort of piece the puzzle by now… lol.

Funny thing is, I never got around to loving spicy food which is ironic and at the same time, pissed my baby sitter off a great deal but truthfully, I was in it for the cheese and years later, I still am! haha

I’ve been keeping this entry in my draft section for quite some time now and it’s about time this post saw the light of day. So here it goes.

Red Lizard is another gastronomic genius brought to us by The Abaca Group who is also responsible for bringing us Abaca bakeries, Beqaa, Luncheonette, Maya, Phat Pho & Tavolata. Truthfully, I’ve only been to Abaca bakeries, The Luncheonette, Maya & Red Lizard but each one was a great experience and I’m looking forward to checking out their other selections.

Back to Red Lizard.

Red Lizard is pretty straight forward (like their website says) and offers basic, classic Mexican dishes that are affordable and keep true to original Mexican flavors. They’re homage to original flavors without compromising taste to appeal to a mass audience is what truly made me appreciate them.

Their interior is pretty dope- walls covered with luminescent wall mountings and caricatures depicting Mexican culture and bright signage’s all paying homage to Mexican pop culture. It has a very bright and light aura inside inviting everyone to come on over, grab a good meal and just have a good time.

Here’s a look at the menu and their food:

Homemade Masa Chips with assorted dips – P69.00 ++

Carnitas Quesadillas – P199.00

Tacquitos with shredded pork- P299.00/ 6 pcs.

Burritos

MOJITOS!

It’s hard to find decent Mexican places around Cebu, which I think is because Cebuano’s haven’t fully embraced this awesome cuisine yet. But it is comforting to know that there’s been a slow growth of decent Mexican food around the city and if you asked me, Red Lizard is on the top of that list!

Check out their Facebook page, Instagram & Website.

The Pyramid Opens In It Park, Cebu- Menu, Prices & Everything Else You Need To Know

Pyramids have always symbolized great things amongst men. For example, Mfuniselwa Bhengu believed that pyramids symbolized consciousness of strength and energy; some believe it is a symbol of life & death; The Egyptians believed pyramids held a great significance on their great spiritual quest and in our more modern times, some kooks believe it’s the symbol of a secret society that drives the very core of industries and subconscious aka the Illuminati. (Sorry, I really just had to throw that in there. lol.)

Here in Cebu, pyramids or The Pyramid rather, symbolizes opportunity; companionship and a new place for locals and guests to appreciate Cebuano culture, art, food and of course, the people.

In my April vlog, I take you inside The Pyramid even before they had opened their doors to the public so I could sample a few of the dishes that they had been preparing before opening. I was invited again some time this month to sample MORE of their food during their soft opening and fast forward to present day, now can YOU!

Cebu is small and word’s gotten around that the proprietor of The Pyramid is the same businessmen who brought us Coffee Prince so naturally the next question would be is, “so, is it a coffee shop?” No, but they do serve coffee, if that’s what you’re looking for. Its glass panels widen up the entire space and there are lots of nooks and corners for you to choose from whether you’re looking for a relaxing winding down sesh with a loved one, a loud get together with friends or just a quick catch up over coffee or drinks.
