IssaEats: Strike While The (Black) Iron’s Hot

I first heard about Black Iron from a friend and the second time after walking out from a nearby restaurant. Although I’ve never really heard any reviews about the place (except for when my friend mentioned it) nor was it packed with people on the night we passed by, I was still curious to check it out mostly because they served steaks and burgers. But mostly for the steaks.

I usually get to enjoy steaks when the men in my life make them for me (my papa  & Paolo) but since my papa has been away for a while, Paolo has been busy with life and the Casa Verde steaks just don’t entice me like they used to anymore- I dragged my mom down to Black Iron.

DSCF0846

Black Iron is located at the Ginza Compound in Banilad where their brightly colored walls that are heavily adorned with different brand memorabilia and a chalkboard painted wall made me want to grab a beer and talk sports with my own mother.

The establishment was roomy, the atmosphere was light and I was particularly in love with their staff who happily accommodated us throughout the entire evening. I am such a sucker for good service.

The place was clean and I also enjoyed the fact that I could see the kitchen through the glass fixtures in front of us. It was entertaining and I felt safer knowing that I could see what was going on in the kitchen. It was mostly their confidence that impressed me.

For P 160.00, I guess the salad was just ok. I usually prefer having more green options in my salad and I didn’t find the dressing too amazing either. But they were fresh and crisp, which is one thing that I like to pay particular attention to when it comes to salads. I just wish there was a little variation with the the lettuce.

DSCF0867

DSCF0878

DSCF0889

Black Iron boasts of their high quality U.S. Beef and although I don’t really know what the differences are, the steak I had that night was pretty good. It was cooked to my liking, it was juicy, it came in impressive servings and it had flavor. I say this because oftentimes I’ll have a steak and I won’t be able to taste anything at all so at P 1, 350.00, I’m relieved that it didn’t feel like I was gnawing on cardboard.

I originally ordered my steak medium rare (I know you’re going to judge me) which I really did enjoy but I eventually had to send it back to have it cooked to well done because my mother refused to eat anything that had blood on it. The staff was very nice to us and accommodated our request and in a few minutes, it was like a was eating a completely different steak.

A couple problems I had with my steak though were that it took a surprisingly longer time to cook than expected, considering that I had it in medium rare and the second time in well done. I guess I should have paid more attention to the glass window which was there for that purpose so maybe I wasn’t really that hungry. Another problem I had with the steak was that it was a bit stringy and required me to take smaller bites so I wouldn’t choke.

DSCF0869

As for now, I think I’m going to take a break from a thousand peso steaks and stick to the SnR cuts that we enjoy cooking at home.  Although I did enjoy my steak, I’ll be honest and say that my mom did not. But in her defense, she had just come back from the States and she probably had her own fare share of everything that is awesome.

So I know you’re all probably wondering if I would go back again despite the mixed review and my answer is yes, I would! I probably wouldn’t order the same things though but there were still a few things on their menu that I’m very eager to try out like their burgers and Monster Chops (P295.00).

IssaEats: My (CURRENT) Favorite Burger Place

_20150615_105143

I’m not a food blogger, but I know my burgers (and pizza and steaks and potaoes and corn…). Paolo’s first birthday gift to me was an entire box of 4 cheese pizza from Yellow Cab; on our first date as a couple, I ordered a Cheese burger from Dong Juan; on out of town trips, I always have someone bring me back a burger and if mashed potatoes in a box were decent, we’d probably have them everday. Yep, that’s the kind of people we are.

Last Decemeber, I went to Manila to eat burgers. Unintended, of course but boy, did I eat a lot of burgers in a span of a week! And every chance I get, i’m always tasting new ones regardless of how affordable or pricey it is. Yes, I’ve tried Angel’s and Minute Burger; Yes, I’ve had the McDonald’s black and white burger even if I haven’t been to HK yet and it was only available there and yes, I did get a giant burger for my birthday. So what I’m really trying to say here is:

Burgers are my life, people. It’s not just a quick snack on the way home… It’s the main course!

So far, the top places on my list are: 8 cut burgers (Manila), Kri (Dumaguette), Backyard Burgers (Bacolod) and finally, Fat Cow here in Cebu City.

It is important that I make it apparent to you as early as now that I am a no frills type of burger eater. In the exemption of BB’s, I like my burgers based on the perfect blend of the right bun (even if I highly dislike bread), basic condiments, a quality seasoned patty made of course from good meat, and your everyday tomatoes, onions and lettuce. Oh, and cheese. LOTS OF CHEDDAR CHEESE. Burgers with fancy sauce just don’t cut it for me, they seem more like fancy sandwiches which is why I have been finding it so hard to find a local burger place to love here in the metro.

DSC_0505

DSC_0508

On one of our take out adventures, Paolo and I decided to try out Fat Cow located in BTC. I’ve been hearing mostly good reviews in the past year but since we live in the South, Fat Cow hasn’t really been a top priority to us. But boy am I glad that I suddenly got cramps in the middle of the car ride home which required immediate soothing thus, landing us there.

DSC_0512

(Angus Burger P230.00)

In the 4 years that Paolo and I have been together, nothing has ever come close to his Charlies Grind and Grill angus burger but FINALLY, he has made room in his heart to a close 2nd. Priced at P230.00, it made me appreciate how awesome burgers were again after a long time of force feeding myself with generic tasting patties.

DSC_0510

(Bacon Cheeseburger P190.00)

It if were up to me, I would’ve just ordered a cheese burger but since Paolo did the ordering, I landed with a Bacon Cheeseburgr instead. I’ve had bad experiences with these kinds of burgers because I can either not taste the patty because of the bacons overpowering saltiness or I end up not tasting the bacon at all because of the patty but this burger was just the right blend of everything and i’m going to exaggerate a little and say, it created a beautiful harmony in my mouth. Also, i. really.loved.that.patty.and.the.lettuce.was.not.soggy!!

Fat Cow isn’t one of those bang for buck burgers because honestly, it’s quite a pricey burger. With individually priced burgers ranging from P150.00 up, you’d still have to pay an additional P100.00 for a drink and fries. We opted out because 1. I wasn’t ordering, 2. Paolo thinks it’s high time we went on a diet. (As if not having fries would make any difference. Ha!)

With the well known fact that it is a bit of an expensive burger, I’ll still tell you that it’s a burger I would pay good money for! If I wanted a cheap burger, I’d go to McDonald’s and if you wanted something greasy and worth your money, Paolo would take you to Burger Joint. But so far, I’m feeling pretty accomplished and I can finally say that I have a favorite burger place in Cebu. FINALLYYYYY!!

Fat Cow is located at the Banilad Town Center. Find out more about them HERE

Til our next food adventure!

Issa (and Paolo)

P.s. I’ve decided to do more food blogs which will most likely involve Paolo because he knows food waaay more than I do. So let me know what you guys think of our new collab which I haven’t really told him about yet. Hihihi

Pancake House Forever! feat. Peanut Buttercup Pancakes

DSC_0323

Pancake house is now offering a delightful new dish, for a limited time only, that definitely has our seal of approval! [See picture below for my agreeing face]

The new Peanut Buttercup Pancakes have now arrived in Cebu and are sure to make you reconsider everything you thought you ever new about pancakes. Whether eaten with bananas [P20.00], 2 pieces [P214.00] or even 3 pieces [P318.00], there is no way to eat this dish and not fall head over heels in love with it! Their not-so-secret uptake to this classic dish is an all time favorite, Reese’s butter cups, which are popularly known for their peanut butter-like taste with a chocolate addition. Pancakes and peanut butter chocolate cups, who would’ve thought?

But don’t take my word for it, a dish like this is better tasted. Head on down to the nearest Pancake House and sample this dish before it’s too late! If you’re not a pancake person, their main course meals are just as delightful… I love their tacos!

No. 9

DSC_3480

Somewhere along the quiet roads of Benedicto Street, sits a beautiful ancestral home-turned-restaurant with amazing food and a warm, cozy environment, as well.

No. 9, with it’s wooden fixtures and interesting interior (my favorite being the huge painting behind a comfortable couch) had me wide eyed and giddy the moment I went in.

It’s the kind of place you’d want to go to with a loved one and whisper secrets in each others ear because of its intimate feel and sophistication. But if you’re looking for a new place to have dinner and perhaps a couple of drinks after, No. 9 also has a beautiful garden for that, too!

DSC_3478

DSC_3474

DSC_3472

I’ll be honest, the food can be a little bit pricey but it’s a small price to pay for a wonderful experience. With dishes ranging from P 280.00- P 450.00, No. 9’s menu is well worth the price.

During our lunch at No. 9, my mom and I ordered the Pork Belly and Fideo Negro while my siblings just took bits and pieces since they had already eaten. It was my first time to sample black pasta, not being a fan of squid ink and all, but as soon as I took a bite of it, I had quickly changed perspectives. As not to be biased, I asked my sister and my mom what they thought about it and they both agreed that it was the best one they had had yet.

The pork belly was equally as scrumptious with pieces of arugula and salsa to direct it in a classier direction leaving me feeling stuffed and happy.

No. 9 is somewhere I would want to go to for a fancy night out with a boyfriend or friends- especially if I wanted to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city that can oftentimes be irritating.

The food was great, the ambiance superb and the service was so warm and welcoming that we had to resist from over staying.

Yolk Coffee & Breakfast

150740_1578082225745401_8508352197003076554_n

We always want the things we can’t have and despite my egg allergies, I quickly discovered the trying out Yolk was one of the things I just could not resist. No matter how hard I tried!

As soon as I walked into their quaint little establishment, I knew I was going to enjoy my egg and coffee filled dinner even if I knew it would lead to bad case of allergies right after… but it was all worth it!

The first thing I try to pay attention to when I enter a new place is the ambiance. Would it be a nice place to hang out with friends or go on a date? What kind of people would enjoy it and most especially, is the ambiance worth the price of not just to food I’m paying for but the overall experience? Walking into Yolk made me feel like I was about to dine at a rustic countryside cafe with it’s use of mixed materials and their homey feel. I loved how they used bricks, wood and cement to set the vibe right and their use of earth tone hues and smart prints to bring everything together. In a way, it sort of reminded me of my room which also means, I did not want to leave!

IMG_20150130_174547IMG_20150130_174405IMG_20150130_174445IMG_20150130_174556

Prior to going to Yolk, I had asked my friends for suggestions on what to get while I was there. I originally planned on staying away from the eggs but everyone seemed to be pushing me towards the opposite direction so I guess, there was no way of dodging that bullet. The place is named Yolk, after all.

One friend did suggest ordering the IT’S SO FLUFFY (I COULD DIE!) mini-me pancakes [Php 180.00] so we ordered that aside from the Super Beefy Omelet [Php 180.00], Eggs Benny [P280.00] and of course, coffee.

My favorite among the three had to be the pancakes. It had an interesting syrup alternative that consisted of mashed mangoes and a soft but flavorful hint of cinnamon in the mixture. And yes, they were SO FLUFFY, I COULD DIE!

The Eggs Benny is something that I would definitely eat again with Paolo around for reference since he knows more about it than I do. But I did enjoy the variation of this egg as compared to the more common sunny side eggs and omelets.

Preference wise, I’m not a big omelette fan so I wouldn’t be able to give it a fair description. On the other hand, my little brother devoured the whole thing while still asking for seconds. He really liked it!

Yolk is one of the places you’d want to bring your family, friends and your significant others to because of it’s intimate ambiance and great food.

It’s one of those places you’d enjoy spending the afternoons at with a good cup of Joe while having conversations and of course, taking Instagram worthy photos!

Also, the staff there are great and are very accommodating, making your overall experience top notch!

Backyard Burgers in Cebu!

1461319_834662639921740_1557430103401107284_n

It’s not everyday that Cebuano’s are graced with amazing burgers from different corners of the Philippines. Luckily, this year in line with the Sinulog festival, Backyard Burgers from Davao will be setting up and giving us a taste of their gastronomic pieces!

Backyard Burgers takes the business of burger making very seriously and I love the fact that all their burgers are made of fresh ingredients, proving to us that burgers can in fact be hearty, healthy, fresh and top quality.

Make sure to catch them at the Mercado Sinulog and Sinulog Invasion 2105 from January 14 until January 19 to sample their top of the lines beauties such as:

Don’t they all look amazing?

Backyard Burgers surely does not disappoint! Not only are they bringing in their famous pieces here to the Queen City of the South but they are also giving away free burgers to 20 lucky people simply by filling out the survey here.

Can’t wait to see the guys behind these burgers, I’m definitely getting my hands on them! I’m lusting for the Cheesy Steak and Signature burger 😉

The One with The Extremely Lax 10 Year Celebration

Like they say, it’s better late than never. I had originally set this to go live on the eve of my blogging “career’s” 10th year birthday but I was too busy living in the real world to make this post.

So I guess this year’s resolution ought to be: to be more punctual but to live a more meaningful life while documenting it as necessary as possible. Or you know, whatever.

So to continue…

I have a thing for traditions. I used to love them soo much but I’ve eventually killed most of them off but kept this one- just because.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?! I’ve been blogging for 10 wonderful, crazy years!! WHERE’S MY AWARD?!

If you click the years below, you will be able to see the changes I’ve made along the years with every answer. In the past 10 years, I’ve had 3 boyfriends, a million jobs, graduated grade school, high school AND college, traveled, moved in and moved out, started smoking, stopped smoking, started smoking again, gotten drunk and what not. Every time I look back on my past selves I admit; I feel repulsed, amused but always with a sense of empowerment. So enjoy everyone!! The tradition truly lives on!

It’s been an amazing ride and I’d like to thank everyone who made my 2014 as perfect as it was!

Unfortunately, I’m such an internet spazz that I wasn’t able to properly link and back up my photos from when I officially started blogging under Issaplease. This explains ALL the broken images on this site. I promise, 2015 will be better- I promise and I’ll try to fix the clutter :> I’m “smarter” now.

Thanks to everyone who’s been supporting my blog for the longest time ever! To all the friends I’ve made, the jobs I’ve gotten, the brands I’ve worked with and to all the lessons I’ve learned.

Fly Me To The Moon and Back

I started writing as a way to get over my depression and 10 years after, here I still am- no longer depressed but still writing my heart out and still making you guys laugh and smile at all the stupid sh*t I have to say. I am always grateful for that.

This blog is truly the biggest thing that I can ever leave this world and if you ever wanted to know who I really was: crazy, neurotic and a down right pain in the ass; you’d find it all if you skimmed through the pages of this blog that I ever so openly brag about and on Issatalks, where all the magic started.

I’m not going to skim through 2014 anymore like in my older posts because it’s already the 3rd of the new year and seriously, whose got the time for that anymore?! But rest assured, it was an amazing year and I so glad to have spent it with all of you!

LOVE YOU ALL,

PHOTO DIARY: I Went To Manila For The Burgers!

Ok, totally kidding about the burger bit! But yes, they were a great part of my recent Manila trip!

I don’t get to travel a lot due to financial and time constraints but since it was my dearest uncle’s birthday, I decided to not let the opportunity pass me and I went to big, bad Manila on my own… for the very first time! #whimp

Here are some of the photos from my trip. I hope you enjoy!
